Greece's demographic crisis is now visibly reshaping the country's school system. In just three years, Greek schools have enrolled 21,000 fewer students, according to reporting by Kathimerini citing Ministry of Education sources. The hardest-hit levels are kindergartens and primary schools. Around 100 kindergartens and primary schools have closed permanently over that three-year span, as student numbers in many areas dropped too low to keep the schools running. For the 2026-2027 school year alone, the Ministry of Education shut down 75 school units, including 43 kindergartens and 32 primary schools. The closures are concentrated most heavily in Thessaly, followed by the Peloponnese, Central Greece, Central Macedonia, and Western Macedonia. But officials stress the problem is no longer limited to small, remote villages. Ministry of Education officials told Kathimerini that the decline has become so severe that roughly one full classroom is lost from each school every single year. That pace of shrinkage is accelerating, not stabilizing. Until recently, secondary schools were largely insulated, but that is beginning to change. The same demographic pressure is expected to hit middle schools and high schools harder over the coming years, as the smaller cohorts now entering primary school work their way up the system.
