Thousands of emails demanding action on Cyprus have landed in the inboxes of more than half of Britain's MPs, sent through the #HandsOffCyprus campaign run by the National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom. The push comes as the world marks 52 years since Turkey's invasion and continued military occupation of northern Cyprus. The federation set up an emailing tool on its website that lets anyone send a letter to their local MP in under 30 seconds. The federation's president, Christos Karaolis, was direct about the goal, saying Cypriots are determined to keep spreading the message that Turkey's occupation is illegal and that it must end. The federation is specifically calling on the UK government to do everything in its power to get Turkey back to the negotiating table, with any solution to be grounded in the agreed UN framework and both international and EU law. The campaign runs each year around the anniversary of the 1974 invasion, and this year's edition has drawn significant participation from the British-Cypriot community. Federation officials are still urging anyone who hasn't yet sent an email to their MP to do so through the campaign website. The diplomatic picture is also moving, if slowly. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, has held meetings in recent weeks with Cypriot, Turkish, and EU leaders.
