Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hosted US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle at the Maximos Mansion on Wednesday to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, framing the Greece-US relationship as one built on shared democratic values rather than political convenience.
Mitsotakis said the past 250 years show that relationships which stand the test of time are those built on "solid value-based bonds and not merely on circumstances." He pointed to intellectual connections between the American Founding Fathers and Greek revolutionary thinkers as a foundation that goes deeper than standard diplomatic ties.
The Greek PM also called the anniversary a reflection of "the timeless power of the ideas of liberal democracy," saying both nations share a historical path that extends well beyond formal diplomacy. He described the two countries as bound by a "steadily strengthening strategic relationship."
Guilfoyle has served as US Ambassador to Greece since her appointment by President Trump. Her presence at Maximos alongside Mitsotakis signals continued close coordination between Athens and Washington at a senior level.
Mitsotakis closed by saying the two nations' shared values are "the greatest guarantee" that their strategic cooperation will continue to deepen, a statement that carries weight given the current security environment in the Eastern Mediterranean.
