Archbishop Elpidophoros of America traveled to Anchorage, Alaska, this weekend to consecrate the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, marking the first archiepiscopal visit to the remote Greek Orthodox community in nearly half a century. The Transfiguration of the Savior parish is the only Greek Orthodox church in Alaska and the northernmost parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Thousands of miles from the major Greek communities in the continental United States, the parish has built a tight-knit congregation that today includes faithful from Greek, Romanian, Ukrainian, and other backgrounds. Ceremonies began Friday evening with the Great Vespers, presided over by Archbishop Elpidophoros alongside Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco and parish priest Fr. Vasileios Hillhouse. At the close of the service, Archbishop Elpidophoros elevated Fr. Hillhouse to the rank of Protopresbyter of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Fr. Vasileios described the community's isolation as both a challenge and a gift. Speaking to the Orthodox Observer, he said the distance has helped forge unusually close bonds among parishioners, calling the remoteness "one of the blessings." In his address, Archbishop Elpidophoros urged the faithful to see the consecration not as the conclusion of years of effort but as the starting point of a new chapter. "This is not the end, it is the beginning," he said, acknowledging the sacrifices that went into building the church.
