A bipartisan group of US Congress members is pressing the Trump administration to make the Great Sea Interconnector a top American foreign policy priority in the Eastern Mediterranean. The lawmakers wrote directly to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and DFC chief Ben Black, urging Washington to back the undersea cable project linking Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. Cyprus currently operates as an energy island, entirely disconnected from continental European grids. The intervention in Washington comes just days after a major development on the ground. The French investment group Meridiam signed an agreement in Athens to become the majority shareholder in the Great Sea Interconnector company, injecting serious private capital into a project that has faced years of delays. The lawmakers also tied the cable to the Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by Schneider and Bilirakis in May 2025.
