Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Kastellorizo on Sunday, pledging to complete 37 infrastructure projects worth 27 million euros on the remote Aegean island within the next four years. The visit also included a first-ever prime ministerial trip to the tiny islets of Ro and Strongyli, where Mitsotakis spoke with soldiers stationed at the frontier outposts. Speaking after a meeting at Kastellorizo's town hall, Mitsotakis said his commitment is clear: every long-standing problem plaguing the island must be resolved within the next four years. The projects cover six main areas, including energy transition, water and sewage infrastructure, waste management, housing, healthcare, and digital transformation. A priority is the reconstruction of the port's quay walls, which has already secured ESPA funding. The island's chronic water supply and sewage treatment problems are also on the list, along with a new telemetry and monitoring system for the water network. Housing for public servants is a major part of the plan. The Defense Ministry is currently building 12 residences, some of which will house doctors and teachers, while the Coast Guard is adding nine more for its personnel. Mitsotakis said doctors who choose to serve on Kastellorizo should be able to live in fully decent conditions as early as next summer. The government is also transferring 19 acres of land to the municipality of Megisti, where 30 condemned buildings currently stand. New housing will be built on the site with funding from the Interior Ministry. Mitsotakis pointed to a 1917 photograph of Kastellorizo, taken during French rule, noting the island once had more than 10,000 permanent residents. The stated goal now is to reverse decades of depopulation and attract more people to settle there permanently.
