Greece is officially bidding to host the 2028 European Men's Water Polo Championship. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the decision on Facebook on Monday, saying the government accepted a formal request from the Greek Swimming Federation to pursue the hosting rights.
The announcement comes on the heels of a strong stretch for Greek water polo. The national team recently won the Water Polo World Cup, and swimmers Apostolos Christou and Apostolos Siskos both claimed top honors at the European level, with Mitsotakis congratulating them by name in the same post.
Mitsotakis framed the bid as an opportunity to showcase Greece's upgraded Olympic facilities, particularly the aquatic venues, which have undergone significant renovations. He said hosting the championship would put Greece back on the international sports stage and give fans a chance to watch top-level competition on home water.
Greece last hosted a major international water polo event at its Olympic-era facilities, which were built for the 2004 Athens Games. The 2028 bid has not yet been formally submitted to the European Aquatics federation, but the government has now officially committed to pursuing it.
If the bid succeeds, Greece would host one of European water polo's flagship events at a moment when the national team is arguably at its most competitive point in years.
