Turkey has issued a NAVTEX notice authorizing its seismic research vessel Oruc Reis to conduct surveys in the eastern Mediterranean through August 30, clearing the path for a planned 101-kilometer undersea gas pipeline connecting Turkey to occupied northern Cyprus. The pipeline would run 97 kilometers underwater and 4 kilometers overland, linking Anamur on Turkey's Mediterranean coast to Teknecik, east of Kyrenia. Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed the route details, describing a system designed to replace liquid fuels used in power generation in the Turkish-occupied north with natural gas. The NAVTEX follows a memorandum of understanding signed on July 10 between Turkey and the self-declared "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," which Ankara unilaterally recognizes but the international community does not.
