A worker died Monday after a massive explosion tore through a vinegar factory in Examilia, Corinthia, raising fresh questions about workplace safety across Greece. The victim, a 67-year-old man of Albanian origin, was killed when a tank holding between 13,000 and 15,000 liters of vinegar and alcohol mixture ignited, sending a massive fireball into the sky just before 1:30 p.m. His brother found his body inside the factory. Four other workers inside the facility managed to escape just in time. A gardener working outside suffered a minor burn to his hand and was treated at Corinth Hospital. Investigators believe welding work was being carried out on a tank at the time of the blast. Authorities are also looking into whether a propane gas leak from a pipe running through the tank may have triggered the explosion. The exact cause has not yet been confirmed. Fire services sent 32 firefighters and 10 vehicles to the scene, where a large fire broke out following the initial explosion. The incident was captured on video obtained by MEGA, showing a towering wall of flame rising from the facility with a deafening blast heard across the entire region. Three people were arrested at the scene under emergency procedures: the 47-year-old owner of the business, a 46-year-old safety technician, and a 46-year-old operations supervisor. The investigation is being handled by the Corinthia Arson and Major Crimes Unit. The fire service had reportedly certified the facility just days before the explosion, though no further details on that inspection have been made public. According to the Federation of Technical Enterprise Workers of Greece, this fatality brings the total number of workplace deaths in Greece since January 1 of this year to at least 91.
