Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar has accused Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan of making statements that amount to "a clear incitement to genocide," following an interview Fidan gave on CNN Türk.
Sa'ar posted a video on X late Friday with an English translation of the interview, in which Fidan described Israel's policies and mentality as having "become a burden that humanity can no longer bear." Fidan also called Israel one of "humanity's common problems" and demanded that international pressure be applied against it.
In his post, Sa'ar called the remarks "nauseating" and said they represent "classic language of history's greatest tyrants." He specifically pointed to the dehumanization of the Jewish people as a burden, a rhetorical pattern he said belongs to the worst mass murderers in history.
Sa'ar called on the "enlightened world" and Turkey's NATO allies to "unequivocally condemn this explicit call for the destruction of Israel."
The exchange was triggered by Israel's recent official recognition of the Armenian Genocide, a designation Turkey has historically rejected. Ankara called the recognition a political act of retaliation and a diversionary tactic.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Israel was trying to "cover its own crimes" and smear Turkey with false accusations, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.
The dispute puts Turkey's NATO membership under fresh scrutiny, with Israel now publicly pressing the alliance to respond to what it describes as genocidal incitement coming from a member state's top diplomat.
