Greek cinema actress Maro Kontou will be laid to rest this Friday, July 17, at 11:00 a.m., one day after she passed away Wednesday following health complications. The funeral procession begins at the Athens Metropolitan Cathedral before moving to the First Cemetery of Athens. Nikitas Kaklamanis, the Speaker of the Greek Parliament and a close personal friend of Kontou, will deliver the eulogy. The two shared a long friendship, and Kontou had once asked him that whenever their group of friends gathered again for dinner or a game of biriba, they place an empty cigarette and a glass of whisky at her chair in her memory. Her family has asked that instead of funeral wreaths, those wishing to pay their respects make donations to the "Mitera" infant care center in Athens, an organization Kontou served as president.
