Milo Yiannopoulos, the British far-right provocateur who built his American career championing ICE and railing against immigration, was arrested by ICE agents Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. His visa had expired, and a judge had already issued a final deportation order on July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to show up for his hearing. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Yiannopoulos entered the US legally on May 14, 2019, but chose to remain in the country beyond his permitted stay in violation of federal law. He is now being held in Louisiana, the same state that serves as a processing hub for thousands of migrants being deported under the Trump administration. Born in England to a Greek father and British mother, Yiannopoulos rose to prominence during the 2016 Trump campaign as a Breitbart columnist and campus speaker known for provocative rhetoric on Islam, feminism, and gender. He called Trump "daddy" and described his own audience's energy as the same force that carried Trump to the White House. His fall began in February 2017, when comments he made appeared to justify pedophilia. He resigned from Breitbart within days, lost a book deal with Simon and Schuster, and was dropped from CPAC. Twitter had already banned him in 2016, and Facebook removed his account in 2019. Far-right influencer Laura Loomer, who had publicly feuded with Yiannopoulos, claimed on X that she had reported him to ICE and the FBI.
