Two people are dead after a major wildfire broke out on the island of Salamis this afternoon, with firefighters battling two separate fronts simultaneously. The first fire ignited just before 3:00 PM in the Peristeri area, and a second broke out in the Selinia area shortly after. The bodies of two men were discovered near where the Peristeri fire started, with initial reports indicating the blaze began on an uncleaned plot of land. Four emergency alerts were sent to residents' mobile phones across the island throughout the afternoon. The mayor of Salamis told public broadcaster ERT that houses have already caught fire, and described the situation as extremely difficult. He confirmed that sea vessels are standing by for coastal evacuations from the Peristeri area if needed. Authorities have issued evacuation orders across multiple zones. Residents in Peristeri and Ajax Club were told to move toward Aiantio at 3:05 PM. At 3:18 PM, those in the Kolones area were directed to Saterli beach. Further orders followed at 3:32 PM covering the DEI Chaliotis and Perani areas, and at 3:35 PM Kaki Vigla residents were also told to head toward Aiantio. The firefighting operation is substantial. According to authorities, 92 firefighters are on the ground with 23 vehicles, 4 aircraft, and 3 helicopters, along with five ground response teams. Smoke from the fires is already visible from southeastern Attica. The Hellenic Coast Guard has deployed five patrol vessels, four passenger-vehicle ferries, four launches, and one barge to coastal areas around Peristeri, Kolones, Maroudi, and Saterli to assist with any sea evacuations.
